Accessibility

The Vale Housing Association is committed to ensuring that this site is accessible to the widest possible audience. We have developed the site to work both in normal graphical web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and with assistive technologies such as screen readers.

Standards

This site is rendered using XHTML 1.0 Transitional as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and validated using their online validation tools. The site was designed to meet the requirements of the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 at the 'Double-A' level. If you find any part of this site which you believe does not meet either of these standards, please email the webmaster.

Access Keys

We have followed the UK Government's standards for website access keys as closely as possible to provide quick shortcuts to keys parts of the site from any page. To use access keys, press the Alt key and the access key together. In Internet Explorer you may then need to press Return. The following keys are defined:

  • 1 - Home page
  • 3 - Site map
  • 4 - Search
  • 7 - Contact us
  • 8 - Privacy policy
  • 0 - Accessibility information
  • S - Skip navigation

Text Size 

If you wish to increase or decrease the size of the text displayed, in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox the text size may be selected from the options on the View menu. If you are using a different browser, please refer to the manual or online help.

Site Colours

The colors used on the site (except those in images) may be overridden if desired. Instructions for doing so in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are shown below. If you are using a different browser, please refer to the manual or online help.

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
    From the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options". At the bottom of the General tab (usually selected by default) click the button marked Colours. On the colours screen, uncheck the Use Windows colours box and select the cololurs you require for the foreground and background text. Link colours may also be set via this screen in the same way.
  • Mozilla Firefox
    From the Tools menu, select Options. At the bottom of the Content tab (usually selected by default) click the button marked Colours. On the colours screen, uncheck the Use system colours box and select the cololurs you require for the foreground and background text. Link colours may also be set via this screen in the same way. You may also need to uncheck the Allow pages to choose their own colours, instead of my selections above option.

Fonts and styles

The fonts and stlyes used on the site may be overridden or disabled if desired. Instructions for doing so in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are shown below. If you are using a different browser, please refer to the manual or online help.

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
    From the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options". On the "General" tab (Usually selected by default) click the button marked "Accessibility". On the Accessibility screen you can choose to remove any of our stylesheet elements or upload your own stylesheet for your browser to use.
  • Mozilla Firefox
    From the "Tools" menu, select "Options". On the "Content" tab (Usually selected by default) click the "Advanced" button within the "Fonts & Colours" panel.  The "Fonts" screen allows you to select numerous options to alter the appearence of the website. Alternatively, Firefox allows you to quickly remove all formatting by selecting the No Style option from the Page Style submenu of the View menu.
