A mother and daughter were both amongst the winners of The Vale Housing Association’s garden competition. Mrs Gillian Woodward of Wootton won second prize in the large gardens category while her mother, Mrs Miriam Chynoweth of Steventon, won third prize in the small gardens category.
Mrs Woodward, who was thrilled to be one of the winners, said, I never thought I would win one of the prizes. My mother was the one who first got me interested in gardening, and her mother before her was a real enthusiast. Her begonias were brilliant – we’ve never been able to match them.
Emily Griffith of The Vale Housing Association and Ann Marie Crawley of Abingdon Horticultural Society, judged over 30 gardens belonging to tenants of the Association. The first prize winner of the large garden category was Mrs McMahon of Wantage while Mrs Pitts of Wootton won first prize in the small and the container garden category.
Emily Griffith commented, All the gardens we looked at were of a very high standard. We liked Mrs Woodward’s garden because of the use she had made of recycled materials in creating a lovely environment, and looking at her mother’s garden we could see that green fingers ran in the family! She was very creative in making use of space.
Winners will be awarded their certificates, and garden vouchers, at The Vale Housing Association’s Annual General Meeting on 21st September. At the meeting there will also be a summary of how The Vale Housing Association is performing and a buffet supper. All Vale Housing Association tenants are welcome to attend.
All tenants mentioned in this press release are happy to speak to journalists about their gardens.
