Bungalows bring new life to old site

Vale Housing Association tenants, staff and guests enjoyed a game of quoits after a ceremony to celebrate the transformation of an old garage site in Abingdon. Five new bungalows for people with learning difficulties have been built on the site at Robin Close, a new road leading off Larkhill Rd in north Abingdon.

Guests were welcomed by Nicholas Morris, the Chair of The Vale Housing Association’s board, who officially declared the site open. They were then able to look round the bungalows, sample some of a specially designed cake with a picture of a robin on the top and take part in a game of garden quoits.

The development comprises four one-bedroom bungalows and a one two-bedroom bungalow which includes a bedroom/office for care staff. It was developed after demolishing 16 garages and utilising the land at the end of neighbouring gardens. The scheme, which cost a total of £617,000, was built using a Local Authority Social Housing grant, administered by the Vale of White Horse District Council. The Vale Housing Association have worked in partnership with Oxfordshire Social and Health Care to bring the scheme into being, after a need was identified to provide supported living accommodation for people moving on from Stowford House in Shippon. The Association will provide the general housing management services while Social and Health Care will arrange the support and personal services.

Anne-Marie Crawley, Development Manager at The Vale Housing Association, commented, We are very proud of this development which makes excellent use of this dilapidated land. Through working in partnership with Social and Health Care, Vale of White Horse District Council and local residents we have produced a scheme which has enhanced the area and will enable the residents to live in their own homes whilst receiving the necessary support they require.
