New residents of Millington Road in Wallingford will be joining Town and District Councillors and staff and board members of The Vale Housing Association to celebrate the opening of 17 new homes in the road. The properties are part of a larger development by developers Kings Oak in the grounds of the old Wallingford Grammar School and mark further development in the South Oxfordshire district by The Vale Housing Association. The Association now owns nearly 50 homes in Wallingford.
This celebration is especially significant for The Vale Housing Association as it includes the 500th house to be developed or acquired by the Association since it became independent from the Vale of White Horse District Council in 1995. Head of Development, John Mensah says, This achievement has been possible through support from our Local Authority partners, the Housing Corporation, our development partners and, last but not least, through the hard work and dedication of the Association’s own staff.
Ms Kelly Fox has the distinction of moving into the 500th house. In keeping with the school theme, she will be presented with a mortar board and scroll as well as some vouchers towards furnishing her new home, during the ceremony in front of a blackboard detailing how many houses have been built or bought each year by the Vale adding up to a total of 500.
The homes were built as a result of the Section 106 agreement1 between South Oxfordshire District Council and Kings Oak, the developers and the properties have all been let to people with a connection to South Oxfordshire.
Also attending the event will be representatives from Kings Oak, the developers, Ibis, the employers agent, South Oxfordshire District Council and the Housing Corporation, a Government agency which provided some funding towards the development.
1A Section 106 agreement refers to Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 which provides local planning authorities with the power to restrict or regulate the use of land. This has been used by Local Authorities to ensure that a certain proportion of land in their area is used for building housing to be rented at affordable rates.
