Blooming Marvellous!

Green-fingered tenants recently showed off the results of their hard work when they entered the Vale Housing Association’s annual garden competition. Despite a year of challenging conditions for gardeners, the judges were very impressed with the quality of entrants in the District wide competition.

The small garden competition had a new winner Mr Ivor Crawford of Seacourt, Botley. I’ve entered before, but never won so I thought I’d give it a go again. I’ve worked hard on my garden and I was very pleased to find out I’d be given top prize. He put the secret of good gardening down to dedication and plenty of interest. The judges were impressed with his mixture of colourful borders and superb vegetables.

Retired sheltered housing warden, Mrs Ann Pitts of Berrymere Road in Wootton scoped the medium sized garden prize on the strength of her pots and shrubs. The final first prize, for large gardens, went to one of the most impressive entries. Mr & Mrs Cully of Marns Hey, Wantage have transformed the simple turfed area around their disabled bungalow into a beautiful garden. The property was a new one built by the Association only two and a half years ago. The Cully’s moved in 15 months ago.

To achieve so much in such a short space of time is simply amazing. The garden will be even more impressive once it has had time to mature said Ann-Marie Pratley, Secretary of the Abingdon Horticultural Society, who judged the garden.

All the winners will be presented with £25 of gardening vouchers by the Association’s Chief Executive, Mike Roberts and Vice-Chair of the Board and Tenant Representative, Mrs Barbara Russell on 31 July 2001
